P&P is a weekly discussion group hosted by the Women’s Resource Center. Everyone is welcome to come, join the discussion, and snack on some popcorn. If you really want to be on the cutting edge of updates, join our Facebook Group "Perspectives and Popcorn at the Women's Resource Center!"
Past P&P Topics from February 2008:
2/28- Gender Sterotypyes in Advertising
Check out outrageous magazine ads and commercials from 1930 to present, and discuss if gender stereotypes are still an effective means of advertisement!
2/21- Stay-at-Home Moms and Feminism
"She's wasting her degree to raise a family,"... "working mothers have their priorities wrong"...a great divide exists among women who work and those who stay home. Regardless of which you believe is "right" or "best," is there room in Feminism for both groups? Come discuss!
2/11- Hooking Up
What do you think about Rice's Relationship and Hook-up Culture?
2/4- The Rules
This week at Perspectives and Popcorn we're talking about The Rules. Should women really time their phone calls to men to be less than 7 minutes long? Are we not supposed to call men and instead let them do all the pursuing? Are these rules compatible with feminism?
Past Events
Clothesline Project
The Clothesline Project (CLP) is a program started on Cape Cod, MA, in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women.
Alternative Spring Break Trip to D.C.'s Rachel's Women's Center
Participants of the Rice Women's Resource Center Alternative Spring Break 2008 trip went to Washington, D.C. They volunteered at Rachel's Women's Center, a small women's homeless shelter in downtown DC that offers women a safe and comfortable haven. They met some incredible people and painted an awesome mural! They visited Capitol Hill, museums, landmarks, and had an amazing time getting to know the city and each other.
